
In 1799 at Rosetta, a harbor on the Mediterranean coast of
Egypt, a stone was discovered containing the same passage of writing in two
Egyptian scripts and in Classical Greek. The comparison of the known Greek
with the unknown Egyptian scripts proved to be the key to unlocking previously
undecipherable hieroglyphic writing, and in turn an entire culture.
