In 1799 at Rosetta, a harbor on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, a stone was discovered containing the same passage of writing in two Egyptian scripts and in Classical Greek.  The comparison of the known Greek with the unknown Egyptian scripts proved to be the key to unlocking previously undecipherable hieroglyphic writing, and in turn an entire culture.
